St. Joseph Parish  was established January 1, 1924 , by Bishop Patrick J. Keane.  He appointed Father Cornelius H. Murphy as the first Pastor.  The first church, which was later used as a hall, was built in May 1924.  The Rectory was built in 1925, and enlarged in 1929 and again enlarged in 1958.  With the increase in the congregation, Father Murphy needed help, and so the Bishop Robert J. Armstrong gave him his first assistant in 1928, Father Denis Leen.

In 1935, Father Murphy and the parishioners erected the current church building, which was dedicated by Bishop Robert J. Armstrong on  November 3, 1935 .  

Father Michael J. O'Connell came to St. Joseph and opened Our Lady of Fatima School with the assistance of the Sisters of Mercy of Auburn.  The original St. Joseph Church which was being used as a hall, became a school with four grades.  In 1948, even the sitting room in the rectory became a classroom.  The first three classrooms of the school were built in 1949, on Gibson Street ;  the five others were added in 1951, at which time total enrollment was 365 students.

Our Lady of Fatima Convent was built in 1955.  The Sisters of Mercy were the teachers of Our Lady of Fatima School and Sister Finian was the First Principal.  In 1960, the present hall was built at Our Lady of Fatima School and the original church was torn down.  Over the years, structures have been taken down as well as additions added to make up the looks of our present St. Joseph School and Parish grounds.  During the 1987-88 school year, Our Lady of Fatima School was struggling financially to keep its doors open.  So the School Board, as well as the Principal of the School, Sister Kathleen Horgan, met with Bishop Francis Quinn and came up with the idea to change the name of Our Lady of Fatima School to St. Joseph School for marketing purposes and to identify with St. Joseph Parish. The school was closed at the end of the 2012-2013 school year.
